The Second Step: Website Optimisation

The holy grail for companies is to rank high in the organic search list on the left side of the search page, because research shows that searchers are three times more likely click on links on the left side than the right. And click-throughs from the left side cost nothing.

So what we need to do now is to make your website more appealing and more relevant to Google's web spiders. This is what is called ‘website optimisation'.

Website optimisation is a longer-term strategy. While a good Adwords campaign can see your paid links move into the top three within days, optimising your website requires a number of changes to be made to your site, with a strategy to make it all happen and keep it on track. Typically a site can take months to scale the dizzy heights of Google's organic search list (less for Yahoo and Nine MSN).

Website optimisation doesn't mean we have to change the fundamental essence of your website (unless it's actually working against you, and we'll find that out from tracking your Adwords leads through your site). Most good website optimisation is subtle, and happens almost behind the scenes. Without bogging you down with details, we have some very clever geeks who do nothing but eat pizza, drink Coke and optimise websites. They've got literally thousands of customers into Google's top ten.

However, a more visible element which will likely change during optimisation of your website is the text. And here, we go back to Adwords again.

We always recommend our customers start with Adwords, because the results are fast and the statistics we get from running your Adwords campaign in the first month give us hard facts with which to plan your website optimisation: Which key words customers for your goods or services most often type into search engines; which key words bring you the most click-throughs; which key words turn the most click-throughs into sales. Then we optimise your website text, which helps attract the spiders, which improves your ranking in the search engines, which increases traffic to your website, which now works better to sell more of your products. Happiness!

And, when your website is fully optimised and attracting the biggest number of click-throughs from the search engines, you can reduce your investment in paid links. Now, have you ever heard a TV, radio or print advertising rep. tell you to spend less?
